The best place in Dunedin to get an overview of the entire city. You can see the full harbour and is a great place to get some photos. And for the techy people, you can get up close with the transmission tower.

As a local born and bred Dunedinite, who grew up on the flank of Mount Cargill, I went to this place heaps when I was a younger (and, much, much fitter) version of myself.

As other commentators have already stated, this is THE best place in Dunedin to get an overview of the city. (BUT, choose the right weather. The top can be completely clouded in - this is Mount Cargill (680m high) after all).

The top provides really, really good views of the city, the harbour, and west and to the north, like no other vantage point anywhere close to Dunedin.

The top is crested by "The Transmitter". It is - being brutally honest here - a bloody ugly, orange-and-white communications transmission tower that's probably about another 100 or so metres high. There is no escaping the fact that it is not anything you would want to write home about, but, I guess without it, there'd not be a road up to the peak. (And on that, the road, at least the last time I drove up there, suffers from ruts, stones, washouts... etc. It's not really a road that sees a lot of love so drive up there slowly. Enjoy the views. That, after all, is why you're going up there in the first place, right?).

Finally - dress for the weather. It can be brutally windy on top, and the weather can change reasonably quickly. I know that a mountain that is 680m in height ain't all that high, but, with the climate of Dunedin generally, and the impact of the coastal proximity, and simply this advice from a lad who grew up in the area: when you go up to Mount Cargill, take a decent wind-breaker, or jacket of some sort. You may not need it, but better to be safe, than sorry.
